Indiana Alternative Measure (I AM)
Indiana Alternate Measure (I AM) Overview
The Indiana Alternate Measure (I AM) is Indiana’s alternate statewide assessment designed for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. I AM measures student achievement and growth using Content Connectors that align with Indiana’s Academic Standards.
I AM is the summative accountability assessment for students with significant cognitive disabilities in grades 3-8 and high school. It assesses:
English/Language Arts (Grades 3-8 and 10)
Mathematics (Grades 3-8 and 10)
Science (Grades 4, 6, and Biology)
Social Studies (Grade 5)
The test is administered online during the spring testing window (typically April–May).
Participation in I AM is determined annually by a student’s Case Conference Committee (CCC). The CCC carefully reviews the student’s present levels of academic and functional performance and applies state participation criteria. A student is eligible for I AM only if all criteria are met, including having a disability that significantly impacts intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior, requiring extensive individualized instruction and support, and requiring substantially adapted materials and methods to access academic content.
Decisions about I AM participation are individualized and based on evidence, not on disability category alone, expected performance, or other factors such as services received or attendance.
